Oneofthemostfundamentalfunctionsinanymicrocontrollerdeviceistheabilitytocontroland

measuretime.ToimplementtimerelatedfunctionsthedeviceincludesaPeriodicTimerModule,

generallyabbreviatedtothenamePTM.ThePTMaremulti-purposetimingunitsandserveto

provideoperationssuchasTimer/Counter,InputCapture,CompareMatchOutputandSinglePulse

OutputaswellasbeingthefunctionalunitforthegenerationofPWMsignals.ThePTMhastwo

individualinterrupts.TheadditionofinputandoutputpinsforthePTMensuresthatusersare

providedwithtimingunitswithawideandflexiblerangeoffeatures.

TM Operation

ThePeriodicTMoffersadiverserangeoffunctions,fromsimpletimingoperationstoPWM

signalgeneration.ThekeytounderstandinghowtheTMoperatesistoseeitintermsofafree

runningcount-upcounterwhosevalueisthencomparedwiththevalueofpre-programmedinternal

comparators.Whenthefreerunningcount-upcounterhasthesamevalueasthepre-programmed

comparator,knownasacomparematchsituation,aTMinterruptsignalwillbegeneratedwhich

canclearthecounterandperhapsalsochangetheconditionoftheTMoutputpin.TheinternalTM

counterisdrivenbyauserselectableclocksource,whichcanbeaninternalclockoranexternalpin.

TM Clock Source

TheclocksourcewhichdrivesthemaincounterinthePTMcanoriginatefromvarioussources.The

selectionoftherequiredclocksourceisimplementedusingthePTCK2~PTCK0bitsinthePTM

controlregister,PTMC0.Theclocksourcecanbearatioofthesystemclock,fSYS,ortheinternal

highclock,fH,thefSUBclocksourceortheexternalPTCKpin.ThePTCKpinclocksourceisusedto

allowanexternalsignaltodrivetheTMasanexternalclocksourceforeventcounting.

TM Interrupts

ThePeriodictypeTMhastwointernalinterrupts,theinternalcomparatorAorcomparatorP,which

generateaTMinterruptwhenacomparematchconditionoccurs.WhenaTMinterruptisgenerated,

itcanbeusedtoclearthecounterandalsotochangethestateoftheTMoutputpin.
