LCD Driver

Forlargevolumeapplications,whichincorporateanLCDintheirdesign,theuseofacustom

displayratherthanamoreexpensivecharacterbaseddisplayreducescostssignificantly.However,

thecorrespondingCOMandSEGsignalsrequired,whichvaryinbothamplitudeandtime,todrive

suchacustomdisplayrequiremanyspecialconsiderationsforproperLCDoperationtooccur.The

devicescontainanLCDDriverfunction,whichwithitsinternalLCDsignalgeneratingcircuitryand

variousoptions,willautomaticallygeneratethesetimeandamplitudevaryingsignalstoprovidea

meansofdirectdrivingandeasyinterfacingtoarangeofcustomLCDs.

AnareaofDataMemoryisespeciallyreservedforusefortheLCDdisplaydata.Thisdataarea

isknownastheLCDMemory.Anydatawrittenherewillbeautomaticallyreadbytheinternal

displaydrivercircuits,whichwillinturnautomaticallygeneratethenecessaryLCDdrivingsignals.

ThereforeanydatawrittenintothisMemorywillbeimmediatelyreflectedintotheactualdisplay

connectedtothemicrocontroller.

AstheLCDMemoryaddressesoverlapthoseoftheGeneralPurposeDataMemory,itisstoredinits

ownindependentSector1area.TheDataMemorySectortobeusedischosenbyusingtheMemory

Pointerhighbyteregisters,whicharespecialfunctionregistersintheDataMemory,withthename,

MP1HandMP2H.ToaccesstheDisplayMemorythereforerequiresfirstthatSector1isselected

bywritingavalueof01HtoMP1HorMP2Hregister.Afterthis,thememorycanthenbeaccessed

byusingindirectaddressingthroughtheuseofMemoryPointerlowbyteMP1LorMP2L.With

Sector1selected,thenusingMP1LorMP2Ltoreadorwritetothememoryarea,startingfromthe

address80Hforallthedevices,willresultinoperationstotheLCDmemory.Directlyaddressing

theDisplayMemorycanbecarriedoutbyusingthecorrespondingextendedinstructions.

TheaccompanyingLCDMemoryMapdiagramshowshowtheinternalLCDmemoryismappedto

theSegmentsandCommonsofthedisplayforthedevices.LCDMemoryMapforthedeviceswith

smallermemorycapacitiescanbeextrapolatedfromthediagrams.
