ThenatureofLiquidCrystalDisplaysrequirethatonlyACvoltagescanbeappliedtotheirpixels astheapplicationofDCvoltagestoLCDpixelsmaycausepermanentdamage.Forthisreasonthe relativecontrastofanLCDdisplayiscontrolledbytheactualRMSvoltageappliedtoeachpixel, whichisequaltotheRMSvalueofthevoltageontheCOMpinminusthevoltageappliedtothe SEGpin.ThisdifferentialRMSvoltagemustbegreaterthantheLCDsaturationvoltageforthe pixeltobeonandlessthanthethresholdvoltageforthepixeltobeoff. TherequirementtolimittheDCvoltagetozeroandtocontrolasmanypixelsaspossiblewith aminimumnumberofconnectionsrequiresthatbothatimeandamplitudesignalisgenerated andappliedtotheapplicationLCD.Thesetimeandamplitudevaryingsignalsareautomatically generatedbytheLCDdrivercircuitsinthemicrocontroller.Whatisknownasthedutydetermines thenumberofcommonlinesused,whicharealsoknownasbackplanesorCOMs.Theduty,which ischosenbyacontrolbittohaveavalueof1/3or1/4andwhichequatestoaCOMnumberof3 or4respectively,thereforedefinesthenumberoftimedivisionswithineachLCDsignalframe. Twotypesofsignalgenerationarealsoprovided,knownasTypeAandTypeB,therequiredtypeis selectedviatheTYPEbitintheLCDC0register.TypeBofferslowerfrequencysignals,however lowerfrequenciesmayintroduceflickeringandinfluencedisplayclarity. |
