Duringprogramexecution,theProgramCounterisusedtokeeptrackoftheaddressofthenext

instructiontobeexecuted.Itisautomaticallyincrementedbyoneeachtimeaninstructionisexecuted

exceptforinstructions,suchas“JMP”or“CALL”thatdemandsajumptoanon-consecutiveProgram

Memoryaddress.Onlythelower8bits,knownastheProgramCounterLowRegister,aredirectly

addressablebytheapplicationprogram.

Whenexecutinginstructionsrequiringjumpstonon-consecutiveaddressessuchasajumpinstruction,

asubroutinecall,interruptorreset,etc.,themicrocontrollermanagesprogramcontrolbyloadingthe

requiredaddressintotheProgramCounter.Forconditionalskipinstructions,oncetheconditionhas

beenmet,thenextinstruction,whichhasalreadybeenfetchedduringthepresentinstructionexecution,

isdiscardedandadummycycletakesitsplacewhilethecorrectinstructionisobtained.

ThelowerbyteoftheProgramCounter,knownastheProgramCounterLowregisterorPCL,is

availableforprogramcontrolandisareadableandwriteableregister.Bytransferringdatadirectly

intothisregister,ashortprogramjumpcanbeexecuteddirectly,however,asonlythislowbyteis

availableformanipulation,thejumpsarelimitedtothepresentpageofmemory,thatis256locations.

Whensuchprogramjumpsareexecuteditshouldalsobenotedthatadummycyclewillbeinserted.

ManipulatingthePCLregistermaycauseprogrambranching,soanextracycleisneededtopre-fetch.
