cycletofirstobtaintheactualjumporcalladdressandthenanothercycletoactuallyexecutethe

branch.Therequirementforthisextracycleshouldbetakenintoaccountbyprogrammersintiming

sensitiveapplications.

Program Counter

Duringprogramexecution,theProgramCounterisusedtokeeptrackoftheaddressofthe

nextinstructiontobeexecuted.Itisautomaticallyincrementedbyoneeachtimeaninstruction

isexecutedexceptforinstructions,suchas“JMP”or“CALL”thatdemandajumptoanon-

consecutiveProgramMemoryaddress.Onlythelower8bits,knownastheProgramCounterLow

Whenexecutinginstructionsrequiringjumpstonon-consecutiveaddressessuchasajumpinstruction,

asubroutinecall,interruptorreset,etc.,themicrocontrollermanagesprogramcontrolbyloadingthe

requiredaddressintotheProgramCounter.Forconditionalskipinstructions,oncetheconditionhas

beenmet,thenextinstruction,whichhasalreadybeenfetchedduringthepresentinstructionexecution,

isdiscardedandadummycycletakesitsplacewhilethecorrectinstructionisobtained.
