Programming Considerations

Withintheuserprogram,oneofthefirstthingstoconsiderisportinitialisation.Afterareset,allof

theI/Odataandportcontrolregisterwillbesethigh.ThismeansthatallI/Opinswilldefaultto

aninputstate,thelevelofwhichdependsontheotherconnectedcircuitryandwhetherpull-high

selectionshavebeenchosen.Iftheportcontrolregister,PAC,isthenprogrammedtosetupsome

pinsasoutputs,theseoutputpinswillhaveaninitialhighoutputvalueunlesstheassociatedport

dataregister,PA,isfirstprogrammed.Selectingwhichpinsareinputsandwhichareoutputscan

beachievedbyte-widebyloadingthecorrectvaluesintotheappropriateportcontrolregisteror

byprogrammingindividualbitsintheportcontrolregisterusingthe"SET[m].i"and"CLR[m].i"

instructions.Notethatwhenusingthesebitcontrolinstructions,aread-modify-writeoperationtakes

place.Themicrocontrollermustfirstreadinthedataontheentireport,modifyittotherequirednew

bitvaluesandthenrewritethisdatabacktotheoutputports.

PortAhastheadditionalcapabilityofprovidingwake-upfunctions.Whenthedevicesareinthe

SLEEPorIDLEMode,variousmethodsareavailabletowakethedevicesup.Oneoftheseisahigh

tolowtransitionofanyofthePortApins.SingleormultiplepinsonPortAcanbesetuptohavethis

function.
