Stack

ThisisaspecialpartofthememorywhichisusedtosavethecontentsoftheProgramCounteronly.

Thestackhaseightlevelsandisneitherpartofthedatanorpartoftheprogramspace,andisneither

readablenorwriteable.TheactivatedlevelisindexedbytheStackPointer,andisneitherreadable

norwriteable.Atasubroutinecallorinterruptacknowledgesignal,thecontentsoftheProgram

Counterarepushedontothestack.Attheendofasubroutineoraninterruptroutine,signaledby

areturninstruction,RETorRETI,theProgramCounterisrestoredtoitspreviousvaluefromthe

stack.Afteradevicereset,theStackPointerwillpointtothetopofthestack.

Ifthestackisfullandanenabledinterrupttakesplace,theinterruptrequestflagwillberecordedbut

theacknowledgesignalwillbeinhibited.WhentheStackPointerisdecremented,byRETorRETI,

theinterruptwillbeserviced.Thisfeaturepreventsstackoverflowallowingtheprogrammertouse

thestructuremoreeasily.However,whenthestackisfull,aCALLsubroutineinstructioncanstill

beexecutedwhichwillresultinastackoverflow.Precautionsshouldbetakentoavoidsuchcases

whichmightcauseunpredictableprogrambranching.

Ifthestackisoverflow,thefirstProgramCountersaveinthestackwillbelost.
