Preliminary DS39016A-page 39 8.0 SYNCHRONOUS SERIAL PORT (SSP) MODULE 8.1 SSP Module Overview The Synchronous Serial Port (SSP) module is a serial interface useful for communicating with other periph- eral or microcontroller devices. These peripheral devices may be Serial EEPROMs, shift registers, dis- play drivers, A/D converters, etc. The SSP module can operate in one of two modes: • Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) • Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) The SSP module in I2C mode works the same in all PIC16C72 series devices that have an SSP module. However the SSP Module in SPI mode has differences between the PIC16C72 and the PIC16CR72 device. The register definitions and operational description of SPI mode has been split into two sections because of the differences between the PIC16C72 and the PIC16CR72 device.
