Cost-Effective A/D 8-Bit OTP MCU

Analog to Digital Converter

Theneedtointerfacetorealworldanalogsignalsisacommonrequirementformanyelectronic

systems.However,toproperlyprocessthesesignalsbyamicrocontroller,theymustfirstbe

convertedintodigitalsignalsbyA/Dconverters.ByintegratingtheA/Dconversionelectronic

circuitryintothemicrocontroller,theneedforexternalcomponentsisreducedsignificantlywiththe

correspondingfollow-onbenefitsoflowercostsandreducedcomponentspacerequirements.

A/D Overview

Thedevicecontainsan8-channelanalogtodigitalconverterwhichcandirectlyinterfacetoexternal

analogsignals,suchasthatfromsensorsorothercontrolsignalsandconvertthesesignalsdirectly

intoeithera12-bitdigitalvalue.

TheaccompanyingblockdiagramshowstheoverallinternalstructureoftheA/Dconverter,together

withitsassociatedregisters.

A/D Converter Structure

A/D Converter Data Registers – ADRL, ADRH

Thedevice,whichhasaninternal12-bitA/Dconverter,requiretwodataregisters,ahighbyte

takesplace,theseregisterscanbedirectlyreadbythemicrocontrollertoobtainthedigitised

conversionvalue.Onlythehighbyteregister,ADRH,utilisesitsfull8-bitcontents.Thelow

byteregisterutilisesonly4bitofits8-bitcontentsasitcontainsonlythelowestbitsofthe12-bit

convertedvalue.
