Thehigherfrequencyoscillatorprovideshigherperformancebutcarrywithitthedisadvantageof higherpowerrequirements,whiletheoppositeisofcoursetrueforthelowerfrequencyoscillator. Withthecapabilityofdynamicallyswitchingbetweenfastandslowsystemclock,thesedevices havetheflexibilitytooptimizetheperformance/powerratio,afeatureespeciallyimportantinpower sensitiveportableapplications.
