External Capacitors
The stability of the SPX52 requires a
2.2µForgreatercapacitorbetweenoutput
andground.Oscillationcouldoccurwithout
this capacitor.Most types of tantalum or
aluminum electrolytic works fine here. For
operationsofbelow-25°Csolidtantalumis
recommended since the many aluminum
typeshaveelectrolytesthatfreezeatabout
-30°C. The ESR of about 5Ω or less and
resonantfrequencyabove500kHzarethe
mostimportantparametersinthevalueof
thecapacitor.Thecapacitorvaluecanbe
increasedwithoutlimit.
The SPX52, unlike other low dropout
regulatorswillremainstableandinregula-
tionwithnoloadinadditiontotheinternal
voltage divider.This feature is especially
important in applications like CMOS RAM
keep-alive.
Ifthereismorethan0inchesofwirebe-
tween the input and the AC filter capacitor,
orifabatteryisusedastheinput,thena
0.µF tantalum or aluminum electrolytic
capacitorshouldbeplacedfromtheinput
totheground.
Reducing Output Noise
ItmaybeanadvantagetoreducetheAC
noisepresentattheoutput.Onewayistore-
ducetheregulatorbandwidthbyincreasing
thesizeoftheoutputcapacitor.Increasing
thecapacitorfromµFto220µFonlyde-
creasesthenoisefrom430µVto60µVrms
fora00kHzbandwidthat5Voutput.
